Artist Statement
My ritual is drag; it is seeking vessels to tell my story through. The ritual demands empathy as a queer world is spotlit and unveiled, as well as it is advocated for. My work is often a culmination of references, pulled from past and present. At the heart of my practice is the queer sensibility in aesthetics referred to as “camp”, perhaps stemming from the French se camper—“to posture boldly”—or the Italian campeggiare, “to stand out.” Camp perplexes, performs, and revels in its own paradox. I use it as a transformative, honoring queer motif. When you are easily ignored, your rights are easily ignored.
The work I make is a simultaneous means of self-preservation and exorcism. It allows me to breathe, as it does advocate. I dance a fine line between approachable and demanding. My work is campy, theatrical, and weird but very serious. Guided by my own identity in the context of socio political events, my art becomes a lens to examine the intricate interplay between self and society. Each piece captures the delicate yet enduring essence of identity.
I use film photography, videography, performance, and installation to execute my work. Printmaking, drawing, and sculpture often inform my process. I use an interdisciplinary approach to make my work multi-faceted; the variety of mediums aids in creating work that feels alive. I encourage viewers to become an active participant in the art, rather than a bystander. Life can be a drag, so be one.
